Description of the adventure:Welcome to a swim & hike in Sweden's new national park.
This year, Sweden's second sea-based national park is inaugurated in
Nämdöarkipelagen. We will have the honor of seeing it both above and below the surface when
we hike and swim right through it.
We start by taking a taxi boat from Stavsnäs winter harbor on the mainland to
the center of the national park, Hemviken on Bullerö.
Bullerö is the last island before the open sea and here there is a hostel
and an official residence for the county administrative board's nature guard.
It is also a place with an exciting history: the island was for many
years a gathering place for the artist elite of the time and other prominent
people. Painters Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn and author
Albert Engström worked and socialized here. A couple of decades into the 20th century
Bruno Liljefors sold his Bullerö to newspaper king and financier
Torsten Kreuger (brother of Ivar Kreuger).
Before we set off on our swim hike, we visit Bruno Liljefors'
hunting lodge, where the Swedish artistic elite dined and partied in
the early 1900s.
Stage 1We walk across the campsite between the rocky ridges and take
the North Path north on Bullerö. The path is hilly and puts balance and
feet to the test. After half a kilometer we come to a lookout point, where we
stop and take in the fantastic view of the sea and the islands
inside. Maybe we'll even see a sea eagle, which is plentiful on
Bullerö.
We walk on along Ormbranten and Maren, turn right on the path
and walk along Norrfladen. Finally we reach the northernmost point of
the island, Drommen. It is a bulging rock that gives a nice view of Sandhamn
in the north and our next stage in the west.
1.5 km
Stage 2Plums in the water and the sight set on Mickelskär. We swim over
Dromrevet and Norrkobben before we embark on an approximately 200 meter
long stretch in open water with probably side wind from the south / southwest
(it usually blows like that in the summers). Short break on the shore of
Mickelksär before we set off and swim 400 meters towards the strait between
Vitkobbarna. We hike over Lilla Vitkobben and aim for the strait
between Stora Melskär and Norra Melskär. It will be 600 meters of tough swimming
with wind and waves from the front. Bite together. Soon we are in the lee and
bobbing in Stora Fladen.
The next swim is 700 meters to Bredkobbarna and now we have, with
a little luck, the wind from behind, so we get a little push up towards the cob.
We walk with the suits on over Bredkobben, take the opportunity to drink
and have a bar before we swim the 400 meters over to Lilla Ören, take a
short walk over the cob and then a sheltered swim of 100 meters to
Stora Ören.
We have now completed the most exposed part of our swimhike and
take a 300 meter swim in protected water to the next hike on Rågskär.
Stage 3Off with the wetsuits and time for lunch and rest. In the early 1900s, Rågskär and the surrounding islands
belonged to the shoe manufacturer Gustav Pott.
He was not particularly fond of water and boating, but he was more
interested in hunting. Therefore, he gave the crofter family Sandström on Rågskär
the task of doing more than a day's work and constructing a 2.5 kilometer long
bridge system between the islands in his archipelago, from Idöborg, via Idön,
Kovilorna, Långskär and Kalvholmen to Rågskär and between the islands
at Braka and in the northern Skoboraden.
After lunch we join Rågskär's nature trail that takes us through
both open mown meadows and wooded areas to the crofts where
the Sandström family once lived and the County Administrative Board now rents out. After a
tour among the old crofts, which are preserved in their original condition, we continue on
the nature trail to Vassen.
We put on our suits and get ready for the last few swims.
Approximately 1.2 km
Stage 4We start in Vassen on the western side of Rägskär and make a choice of route:
1) Swim to the northern part of Långskär and walk a bit with
the suits on before we swim over to Alkläppen and on to our goal
Idöborg
2) Swim in between Böteskobben and Långskär, round Långskär's
southern tip and swim up between Långskär and Björkkobb/Kamelkobben
and then further along the western side of Alkläppen before we cross over to
Idöborg
3) Swim over to Långskär's northern tip and then over to Idön via
Stora and Lilla Kovilan. Then along the island to Idöborg.
Here, weather and wind and the desire to swim will decide. Now we can see the
old red main building on Idön, which stands on German iron balaclavas from
the Ruhr and was built by Gutav Pott as a gazebo and outpost to
shoot seabirds along the entire west side of Långskär. Rumor has it that it
was also a "gazebo" for the German entrepreneur.
Idöborg's guest harbor is visible in the south. The island was bought by Torsten Kreuger in 1927
and is still in the family's possession. In the last five years,
the family business has developed the island into a competitor/complement to
the archipelago's No. 1 stop, Sandhamn.
We swim to the finish line on the sandy beach below the sauna and now
sauna, rest and a well-deserved rest await.
Route choice 1: Swimming 300 meters, hiking 800 meters, swimming 200 meters,
hiking 100 meters, swimming 400 meters
Route choice 2: swimming 2.6 km
Route choice 3: swimming 1.3 km
This is a beautiful and adventurous adventure where you make your way through the world's most beautiful archipelago countryside completely by yourself.
